Thwaites Nail Splitter – 13 cm
Thwaites Nail Splitter – 13 cm
Thick, involuted and ingrown nails rarely give way to a standard nipper. The Thwaites Nail Splitter is the instrument clinicians reach for when a nail needs to be divided cleanly along its length rather than nibbled away at the edge.
Its narrow, tapered tip slides beneath the nail plate so you can see and feel exactly where the jaws sit before any pressure is applied. The cutting edges then meet along their full length, splitting the nail in one controlled action instead of several crushing bites — which is what keeps the nail plate intact, the sulcus undisturbed and the patient comfortable in the chair.
Measuring 13 cm, the instrument is built on a fully tempered box joint that holds the jaws in alignment cut after cut, with a double-spring action that reopens the handles for you between passes. Made from medical-grade stainless steel and fully autoclavable, it is made to be sterilised, stored and used again the next day.
For use by podiatrists, foot-care nurses and other suitably trained clinicians.
Key Benefits
- Divide a thick or involuted nail in one clean pass, not a dozen crushing bites
- Reach the nail spike you can see but cannot get a nipper around
- Slide beneath the plate first, so you know where the blade sits before you close the handles
- Keep the surrounding sulcus and nail bed undisturbed during partial nail avulsion work
- Jaws that still meet perfectly after months on the autoclave cycle, thanks to the tempered box joint
- Less hand fatigue across a full list — the double spring reopens the handles for you
- Sterilise it tonight, use it again tomorrow
Features
- Narrow, tapered jaw designed to pass under the nail plate
- Cutting edges meet along their full length for a clean longitudinal split
- Fully tempered box joint maintains blade alignment under load
- Double-spring action reopens the jaws automatically after each cut
- Plain, smooth handles for controlled clinical grip
- 13 cm length suited to seated chair-side work
- Medical-grade stainless steel, passivated for corrosion resistance
- Fully autoclavable and reusable
How to Use
- Confirm the instrument has been cleaned and sterilised, and inspect the jaws for alignment and sharpness before use.
- Assess the nail and plan your cut in line with your own clinical training and your practice protocol.
- Open the handles and introduce the narrow tip beneath the free edge of the nail plate, keeping the lower jaw against the nail and clear of the nail bed.
- Advance the tip only as far as your intended cutting line, checking the patient's comfort as you go.
- Close the handles with steady, even pressure to split the nail along its length.
- Release and allow the spring to reopen the jaws, then reposition for a further pass if needed.
- Remove the divided section with an appropriate forceps or elevator and finish the edges as your treatment plan requires.
- After use, clean the instrument thoroughly, paying attention to the box joint, then dry, lubricate the joint and sterilise following your practice's decontamination procedure.
- Store dry, in the open position where possible, and inspect again before the next use.
Ideal For
- Podiatry clinics and foot-care rooms
- Partial nail avulsion (PNA) procedures
- Removing nail spikes and involuted nail edges
- Thickened, onychauxic or onychogryphotic nails
- Clinicians who need a controlled longitudinal split rather than an edge cut
- Practices needing a reusable, autoclavable instrument for daily lists
Important Care and Safety
- Professional use only. This instrument is intended for podiatrists, foot-care nurses and other clinicians trained in nail procedures, and is not suitable for self-treatment at home.
- Clean, dry and sterilise before first use and between every patient, following your practice's decontamination policy.
- Inspect the jaws, joint and springs before each use. Withdraw the instrument from service if the edges are dull, chipped or misaligned.
- Do not use on inflamed, infected, bleeding or otherwise compromised tissue without appropriate clinical assessment.
- Dry the instrument thoroughly after cleaning and lubricate the box joint to prevent corrosion and stiffness.
- Do not use the splitter to cut wire, dressings or any material other than nail.
- Store safely and keep out of reach of children.
- Patients with diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, reduced sensation or immunosuppression require appropriate clinical assessment before any nail procedure is undertaken.
