What Are Corns and Callus?

Corns and callus are areas of thickened skin that develop in response to repeated pressure or friction.

  • Callus is usually a broader area of hard skin
  • Corns are smaller, more focused areas that can become quite tender

They most commonly occur on the toes, ball of the foot, and areas that experience regular rubbing from footwear or altered foot mechanics.

Common Symptoms of Corns and Callus

You may be dealing with corns or callus if you notice:

  • Thickened, hardened skin on the foot
  • A small, painful “core” in the skin (corn)
  • Discomfort in shoes or when walking
  • Areas of yellow or waxy skin build-up
  • Localised tenderness under pressure
  • Skin rubbing on the tops or between toes

Important: Not all hard skin is the same. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or uncertainty about the diagnosis, professional assessment is recommended.

Why Do Corns and Callus Develop?

Corns and callus form when the skin tries to protect itself from repeated pressure or friction.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Tight or ill-fitting footwear
  • Prominent toe joints or foot structure
  • High-pressure areas under the ball of the foot
  • Toe deformities (e.g., hammertoes, bunions)
  • Increased walking or standing loads
  • Reduced natural cushioning under the foot

Unless the pressure source is addressed, the hard skin often returns.

How FootAid Products Can Help

At FootAid, our focus is on reducing the pressure that causes the skin to thicken, not just temporarily softening the skin.

Depending on your needs, helpful strategies may include:

✔️ Pressure-relieving pads and sleeves

Help reduce friction and protect sensitive areas.

✔️ Toe separators and digital supports

Reduce rubbing between toes.

✔️ Cushioning orthotics

Help redistribute load away from high-pressure areas.

✔️ Foot care tools and skin management guidance

Support safe ongoing maintenance at home.

All FootAid products are clinically informed and tested in real practice settings.

How Long Does It Take to Improve?

Many people notice improved comfort within 2–4 weeks once pressure is properly reduced and skin care is managed consistently.

However, recurrence depends on:

  • Footwear choices
  • Foot mechanics
  • Activity levels
  • Ongoing pressure management

Addressing the cause of pressure is key to longer-term success.

Why Choose FootAid?

FootAid was created by Cameron Collins — a New Zealand physiotherapist and podiatrist — after seeing too many patients struggle with ineffective over-the-counter solutions.

Our difference:

  • Clinically informed products
  • Tested on real patients
  • Designed for real-world use
  • NZ-based foot health expertise

Our goal is simple: help you move more comfortably, sooner.
