Where a narrow spatula probes, this 6 mm blade lifts. The extra width spreads pressure across more of the nail plate, so when you separate a thickened or firmly adherent nail from its bed you are working with a broad, even contact rather than a narrow point — the plate comes away cleanly instead of lifting in patches. On a big toenail, that difference is the difference between one confident pass and half a dozen tentative ones.

It gives you more to work with in the other everyday jobs too: clearing debris from beneath a broad free edge, sweeping under an onycholytic nail to see how far the separation runs, and carrying dressing material into place with enough blade behind it to seat properly.

The octagonal handle is what makes fine work repeatable. Its flats give you fixed positions to grip and rotate against, so you always know which way the blade is facing without breaking your gaze from the nail — and it stays put on a tray instead of rolling. The 5 mm solid stem carries enough weight to feel deliberate in the hand.

How to Use

1. Confirm the spatula has been cleaned and sterilised before use.
2. Inspect the blade edge — it should be smooth, with no burrs or roughness that could catch tissue.
3. Hold it in a pen grip, resting the handle flats against your fingertips so you can feel the blade's orientation.
4. Introduce the blade under the free edge of the nail, keeping it flat against the underside of the plate rather than angled into the bed.
5. Advance gently and let resistance guide you. Do not force the blade into a space that will not accept it.
6. Use the full width of the blade when separating, so pressure stays spread across the plate rather than concentrated at one corner.
7. Rotate the handle between your fingers to follow the curve of the nail, working in line with your own clinical training and your practice protocol.
8. Check the patient's comfort throughout, particularly where sensation is intact.
9. After use, clean thoroughly, paying attention to the knurling and the blade shoulder, then dry and sterilise following your practice's decontamination procedure.
10. Store dry and inspect the blade edge again before the next use.

Important Care and Safety

• Professional use only. Intended for podiatrists, nurses and other clinicians trained in nail procedures, and not suitable for use at home.
• Clean, dry and sterilise before first use and between every patient, following your practice's decontamination policy.
• Never force the blade beneath a nail. If it will not pass, reassess or use the narrower 4 mm spatula rather than applying pressure.
• Keep the blade flat against the underside of the nail plate. Angling it into the nail bed causes pain and trauma.
• Do not use on inflamed, infected, bleeding or otherwise compromised tissue without appropriate clinical assessment.
• Inspect the blade regularly. Withdraw the instrument from service if the edge becomes burred, bent or rough.
• This is a blunt instrument and is not intended for cutting. Do not use it to lever or prise hard material.
• Dry thoroughly after cleaning and take care that debris does not remain in the knurled grip.
• Store safely and keep out of reach of children.
